How to Be the Successful Leader Everyone Wants to Follow

I have served as a strategic advisor to thousands of Chief Executives, Board Directors, and other senior top management worldwide in major multinational firms as well as in the developing world market organizations, and from my years of interaction with such a broad spectrum of clients – global corporations through diplomatic envoys to government entities – I have personally seen the way some really outstanding leaders are doing their magic without the threat or demand method they are usually connected to.

Data and my own experience in reshaping leadership potential expose in reality those who gain genuine trust and power of persuasion of others are the best performing leaders. Such leaders get a team to perform 43 percent better for productivity and resilience. These findings come from the work I have done with leadership of different kinds across several countries, industries and cultural contexts.

Multinational enterprises want to be led by people who can do a lot more than basic supervision. Thanks to my many years of dealings with diverse work forces around the globe, I identified some common leadership practices which have proven time and again to be extremely inspiring to get people to follow. These strategies bring about changes which can easily be measured across different cultures and industries.

Embrace the Power of Radical Honesty

To be totally transparent is the bare minimum expected in current business settings, but that is not sufficient. What is radical honesty for a leader can be seen clearly when one is willing to explain the whole situation and also admit there being uncertainties and then inviting honest discussion through the process. This level of openness not only fosters deep mutual trust but also opens the door for transformation to be carried out much earlier by revealing and removing the issues and constraints.

Mothering the Silent Symphony

A great leader has highly developed perception about the silent, or less talked about, elements within an organization, that is, organizational dynamics on the unspoken level. Careful watching coupled with one’s personal physical presence and the choice of right moments lead to an atmosphere in which one’s teams feel they can be creative and push boundaries. It is also a skill to know when you do not need to get involved anymore and trust your people who are the best in giving results themselves.

Plant the Seeds of Tomorrow

Leadership that looks at developing talent in a strategic way is a big step forward compared to the old and narrow approach of only preparing candidates when someone moves up. It is all about setting things up in ways that identify, develop, and offer meaningful challenges to people. When the role of the leadership is to create great leaders of the future, it leads to gaining and maintaining the position of a superior competitor.

Say with your feet, then run

Your role as a leader, a lot, depends on how others see you, and to have them trust you, what is important is your consistent demonstration of high performance. Role modeling should so go beyond mere conformity to established standards through leading by example and setting new standards. You show through your behavior what kind of people the organization would be and how it would be successful and innovative at the same time.

Give the flame with which people are to warm their soul

In the modern workplace, a leader should have the ability to connect one worker with what that worker does to how the whole of that work affects the whole of the organization and then the whole of the world. It is a matter of developing clever methods that not only help the business but also the people to flourish. It is only when managers get to grips with the connection between personal growth and organizational goal fulfillment, that teams become committed and innovative and at a level never seen before.

These principles will differentiate two types of leader: one that relies on command by position and the second who leads through influence. When you fully comprehend and practice these things, you are able to create a setting where the people voluntarily follow you because they have both trust and respect for you as a leader as well as for your cause.

Lead from Within: leaders who have been really able can achieve results by leading their people without the use of authority.
